The group or association of users and visitors of the free operating system GNU / Linux distribution in Catalan, also known as CALIU, was founded on February 2, 1999 within the forum “Linux VilaWeb”. Strictly speaking the foundation of CALIU was generally initiated by Eduard Fabra when he posted a message in the forum asking for different opinions, thoughts and ideas considering the creation of a group of Linux users in Catalan: “Creating a group of Linux users in Catalan in order to unify and combine resources as well as efforts considering the adaption of know-how, general knowledge, skills and capabilities, particularly with regard to the Linux operating system, to our own language. If you like the idea of a Catalan Linux Users Group (CALIU) and / or if you already have specific prospects concerning the foundation of such a group feel free to continue this discussion in the forum “Linux VilaWeb Computing”.
On the first days nobody replied to Fabra’s post, but then, strictly speaking on January 3, 1999, a great number of people echoed the message. Even more and more users gradually became interested in the training group. Consequently, some people created a mailing list, and about a month later, on March 23, 1999 a full list of group members was finished. In this context it has to be mentioned that this list was never really complete. Strictly speaking from that very day until now, the number of members has continuously grown to reach around 110 members.
The group and association of users and visitors of the free operating system GNU / Linux distribution in Catalan focuses several tasks, processes and aspects as mentioned and declared on the previous site. One of these focal points is the translation project, in other words the creation of a document that describes functions, the general installation of the Linux operating system and several applications in Catalan.
